KENNETH SCHANZER

Kenneth Schanzer was named president of NBC Sports on June 18, 1998. He is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operation of the division. The appointment came after two stints as executive vice president of NBC Sports, first from 1983 to 1993 and then from 1995 to June 1998. From July 1993 through October 1995, Schanzer served as the president and CEO of The Baseball Network, the joint venture of Major League Baseball, ABC and NBC. The Baseball Network oversaw the marketing, television sales and television production for the partners. Schanzer initially came to NBC Sports in November 1981 and served as Vice President, Talent and Program Negotiations, until his appointment as executive vice president in June 1983. Before joining NBC Sports, he served eight months as Senior Vice President, Government Relations, for the National Association of Broadcasters.

Schanzer has played a major role in breaking new ground in the business of network television sports. He has had a pivotal role in the property acquisitions that have put NBC Sports in the lead position among sports broadcasters. Schanzer was directly responsible for NBC’s landmark agreement for exclusive network telecast rights of the University of Notre Dame’s home football games. That agreement began in 1991, has been renewed twice, and currently runs through 2005. He was also pivotal in the construction of NBC’s first four-year renewal with the National Basketball Association, which extended through 1998, and the most recent contract, which carries through 2002. NBC retained its network exclusivity with the NBA in that agreement, making it one of the most valuable in the ever-splintering world of network television. He has played an integral role in NBC Sports’ acquisition of other major sports properties, including the Olympics, NASCAR, the Triple Crown of horse racing, the French Open and The Players Championship.

Schanzer is a 1966 graduate of Colgate University and earned his juris doctor degree at Columbia Law School in 1970.
